GALLOP Southern horse pasture blend is suitable for temperate regions of Australia that have wetter summers and mild winters. All of our horse pasture mixes are custom made and are low in non-structural carbohydrates to help prevent laminitis/founder in horses and ponies.

Sow Rate: 6-8kg per 1000m2

GALLOP horse pasture blends have been specifically formulated to reduce the risk of equine laminitis and founder. The grasses in this blend have been selected for their low non-structural carboydrates, that will grow well in the temperate regions of Australia. All three grasses are cool season species.

This unique blend is an alternative to harmful introduced cool season grasses like Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata).  In all introduced cool season grasses excess carbohydrate is stored as simple sugars such as fructose and glucose, while native Australian cool season grasses, store carbohydrates as starch. The horse can digest this in a non-harmful way. An elevated content of nonstructural carbohydrates such as fructose in pasture grasses is found to be one of the main causes of laminitis / founder in horses and ponies.

Mix components*:

For example, the Weeping grass and Wallaby grasses easily fall under this threshold having fructose levels of less than 0.2 g, glucose of less than 0.2 g and total sugars of less than 1.0 g/100g.

The harmful sugars such as fructose can be found in high levels in the introduced species below:

      • Wimmera ryegrass (Lolium rigidum),
      • Barley grass (Hordeum leporinum) & barley for-age (Hordeum vulgare),
      • Wild oats (Avena fatua),
      • Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne),
      • Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata),
      • Yorkshire Fog (Holcus lanatus).

*The recommended thresholds to avoid equine laminitis are to keep NSC’s below 10 g/100g of the fodder.
