GALLOP Northern horse pasture blend is suitable for harsh regions of Australia that have hotter summers and drier winters. All of our horse pasture mixes are custom made and are low in non-structural carbohydrates to help prevent laminitis/founder in horses and ponies.
Sow Rate: 6-8kg per acre
GALLOP horse pasture blends have been specifically formulated to reduce the risk of equine laminitis and founders. The grasses in this particular blend have been selected their low free sugar and high structural carbohydrate properties, as well as their optimum climate for growth being temperate regions in Australia. All three grasses are cool season species and prefer damper regions of Australia with cooler temperatures.
This unique blend is an alternative to harmful introduced cool season grasses like perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata). In all the introduced cool season grasses excess carbohydrate is stored as simple sugars such as fructose and glucose, while in the native Australian cool season types it is stored as starch which is digested by horse in a non-harmful way. An elevated content of nonstructural carbohydrates such as fructose in pasture grasses found to be one of the main causes of laminitis / founder in horses and ponies.
- Curly Mitchell grass (Astrebla lappacea)
- Black Spear grass (Heteropogon contortus)
- Kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra)
- QLD Blue grass (Dicanthium sericeum)
- Native Wheat grass (Anthosachne scabra)
Australian native grasses easily fall under this threshold having contents for fructose of less than 0.2, Glucose of less than 0.2 and total sugars of less than 1.0 g/100g.
*The recommended thresholds to avoid equine laminitis are to keep NSC’s below 10 g/100g of the fodder.
